Frederic Lezmi


Frederic Lezmi, born in 1978, grew up in Dakar, Geneva and the Black Forest with a Lebanese-German background. After a year as assistant to German photographer Wolfgang Zurborn at Gallery Lichtblick in Cologne, he studied Visual Communication at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany leading to a Diploma in Photography in 2009. He obtained his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts at the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in Beirut, Lebanon. Since 2006, he has been working as assistant of Markus Schaden at Schaden.com in Cologne and has been working on numerous book and exhibition projects.

His series “Arabian Prospects” won several prizes and was exhibited worldwide. His first book “Beyond Borders“ has received the BFF-Promotion Award as well as the Reinhart-Wolf Prize 2009 for best final degree work in photography. “Beyond Borders“ was published by White Press/Schaden.com in 2009. It is designed as a 11-meter accordion fold-out and was nominated by Garry Badger for the Photobook Award in Kassel and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. Since 2010, he is a member of the German photo agency Laif. Frederic Lezmi lives and works in Istanbul.

He will be conducting a Book Lab at The Empire Project's space Poligon in February/ March 2013 and will be showing an exhibition on Ed van der Elsken's legendary photo book "Love on the Left Bank" in April 2013 (together with Markus Schaden and Nina Poppe).
