On the cusp of celebrating 400 years of strong diplomatic ties between two former empires, it is fitting that the selection of works from this singular talent be the inaugural event that sets the pace of Istanbul's newest institution, "Empire", a project space of the SSCA (Society for the Support of Contemporary Art) directed by Kerimcan Güleryüz.
The selection of works featured in the show covers nine unique series, and documents the last seven years of the work of an artist who is destined to leave a powerful imprint on the international arts scene. Each series of works is a journey in time and space, where the real is dissected, weighed and measured against the ambitions or dreams of "man" via its reconstruction in a virtual environment. It is from this vantage point that de Beijer, spurred by a reliquary of images, journals and personal observation, has delves into the residue left behind by imperial ambition.
